Speakeasies are a bit of a novelty in London which is funny because they are purely an American thing. We never had prohibition during the 20’s. The closest we’ve come to that kind of thing is when Sale of Beer Act 1854 which restricted Sunday opening hours had to be repealed, following widespread rioting in the 1800’s. Secret locations for a knees up in the UK was always welcomed, especially during the 90’s rave culture. Now, that combination of pop-up event, secret location, and alcohol is a winner here.
The NightJar is the 2nd best bar in the world. It’s not surprising that it’s a good’un but I’m not sure what the criteria is. I can say, however, if you love jazz (like proper jazz not the directionless waffly kind), get excited by fancy cocktails, enjoy enough space to all sit down with table service, and have the budget; then you will most likely enjoy yourself.
If none of the above interests you, then order absinthe and have a nap – the seats are comfy.
Has anyone been to one of these kind of bars before? Know any better bars than this? Let me know in the comments below!
